IRB Study #20811
You are being asked to participate in a research study. Scientists do research to answer important questions that might help change or improve the way we do things in the future. This document will give you information about the study to help you decide whether you want to participate. Please read this form, and ask any questions you have, before agreeing to be in the study.
All research is voluntary. You can choose not to take part in this study. If you decide to participate, you can change your mind later and leave the study at any time. You will not be penalized or lose any benefits if you decide not to participate or choose to leave the study later.
This research is intended for individual 18 years of age or older. If you are under age 18, do not complete the survey.
The purpose of this study is to explore how scientists learn about the world.
We are asking you if you want to be in this study because you initiated contact with the research team. The study is being conducted by Dr. Robert Goldstone in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University.
If you agree to be in the study, you will do the following things. You will complete the study at your own computer. In this experiment, you will be learning about behavioral functions of a fictional brain segment. You will be presented with several tasks which involve interacting with visual stimuli. The tasks will include: 1) trials where you will need to choose a task for your fictional subject to complete and then you will see the activations of the fictional brain area of your subject, 2) trials where you will use the mouse to click on the brain map to inhibit activation of the fictional neurons in the chosen area and then you will observe your subject's performance on a specific task, 3) testing trials where you will see the brain activation of your fictional subject and will have to predict the task that the subject is completing, 4) testing trials where you are asked to click on the fictional brain area that you think will affect your fictional subject's performance on the task the most. The experiment will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Before agreeing to participate, please consider the risks and potential benefits of taking part in this study. Possible risks/discomforts associated with the study are fatigue or boredom from providing responses to multiple questions. Breaks are included in the study to minimize this discomfort. Participation in this study involves a potential risk of loss of confidentiality. This risk is minimized by the investigator, as outlined in the Confidentiality section. If at any time after beginning the study you do not wish to continue, you may voluntarily withdraw from the study. You do not need to give any explanation for why you do not want to participate in or complete this study.
We don't think you will have any personal benefits from taking part in this study, but we hope to learn things that will help researchers in the future.
You will be paid for participating in this study. You will receive $10 for your participation. After completing the experiment you will see a link to a separate google form use to indicate your preferred method of payment. In the form, you will be able to choose whether prefer to be reimbursed through PayPal, Venmo, or a gift card of their choice, as well as to indicate your account information used for Venmo or PayPal payments. You can also indicate your reimbursement preferences by contacting the investigators through email (mdubova@iu.edu). All the disbursements will be made within one week following your participation in the study. There is no cost to participate in the study.
We will protect your information and make every effort to keep your personal information confidential, but we cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality. No information which could identify you will be shared in publications about this study.
Your personal information may be shared outside the research study if required by law. We also may need to share your research records with other groups for quality assurance or data analysis. These groups include the Indiana University Institutional Review Board or its designees, and state or federal agencies who may need to access the research records (as allowed by law).
If you have questions about the study or encounter a problem with the research, contact the primary investigator, Dr. Robert Goldstone, at rgoldsto@indiana.edu. For questions about your rights as a research participant or to discuss problems, complaints or concerns about a research study, or to obtain information, or offer input, contact the Indiana University Institutional Review Board at (812) 856-4242 or irb@iu.edu.
By checking below, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the above information, the you are 18 years of age or older, and give your consent to participate in our internet-based study.
